Open Space: Rainwater Harvesting

With Guilherme Weishar of Ecoativo (Portugal)

Sunday 10th October, 4pm UK Time / 5pm CET

Water is the most precious resource. With the destabilization of the weather patterns, rain is becoming more scarce and unpredictable. Therefore, finding ways to catch and store rainfall is of the utmost importance. In this session we will explore the theory of rainwater harvesting according to Brad Lancaster books on the subject and showcase different examples from Portugal.
Main topics:

  • How scarce fresh water truly is
  • Rainwater harvesting principles
  • Examples from Portugal

Organization :EcoAtivo is a ecological movement dedicated to the conservation of the planet and all its inhabitants. Our main areas of focus are: environmental education, designing and implementing ecological restoration projects and nature conservation policymaking. This session is offered through a funded project by the Portuguese National Environmental fund (Fundo Ambiental).

Facilitator: Guilherme Weishar was born in southern Portugal. Over the years he has seen this region become increasingly desertified. In 2017 he did a PDC that changed the way he sees the world. He learned about rainwater harvesting during a reforestation project in Velez Blanco, Spain. The reforestation plan included the construction of hundreds of check dams along the gullies of the mountain. Ever since then he has been learning and implementing similar strategies in several locations in Portugal.
